Thirty-nine Cadets contested the 2009 Fishers Green Open
with twenty-three visitors arriving for the final event in the
Mailspeed Eastern Area Cadet Series. With five of this year's GBR
World team taking part, competition was always going to be fierce.
This was spiced up by the wind on the day.
Over the course of every race the sailors saw the mean wind vary
from 5 knots to 15 knots. More importantly gusts of up to 32knots
heading/lifting at 45 degree angles. This saw most of the fleet
capsizing at some point during the day and keeping the rescue ribs
very busy! All races were three laps of a figure of 8 course
maximising the use of the lake.
Race 1 saw 8539 Will Kennedy/Rhos Hawes lead from start to
finish, gaining a maximum lead of two and a half minutes before
being pegged back to win by 95 seconds. Second at the first windward
was 9083 Jack Shorter/Loni Lillenthal closely followed by 9027 Sam
and Joe Barr. After the first lap 8845 Henry Mills/Will Everitt were
second and 8910 Joe and Francis Butterworth third. Starting the last
lap 8407 Jessica Quinlan/Alex Warrington were third. Jessica
converted this to a second and 7274 Caroline Croft/Jacob Payne
finished third.
In Race 2, 8855 Max and Francesca Ingall set the pace on the
first lap with Henry Mills and Caroline Croft in close pursuit.
Caroline took the lead after the first lap from Max and went on to
win. Jess Quinlan worked her way through the fleet to finish second
from Max third.
Race 3 started after lunch, a few of the novice boats wisely
called it a day. This allowed some changes in crew to some boats
braving the vicious gusts.8363 Abigail Croft/Alex Page led 9635
Louise Latham/Aaron Chadwick and Will Kennedy to the first Windward.
Will was leading halfway round the second lap and went onto win from
Abigail followed by her sister Caroline.
We were down to twenty four starters in Race 4, who provided a
superb final race with some spectacular capsizes and lots of changes
at the front. Will Kennedy narrowly led 9152 Alex and Lucy Corby at
the first windward. Caroline Croft was third. By the second lap Alex
and Louise Latham had overhauled Will. At the start of the final lap
Alex led Will from Jessica Quinlan. With some vicious gusts hitting
the fleet now a number of boats capsized and lost positions. Will
crossed first from Jessica and Caroline Croft. That was fitting as
that was the one, two three overall.
Will Kennedy and Rhos Hawes were the runaway winners of the
Mailspeed Eastern Area Cadet Series, winning all three Open
Meetings.
