Fishers Green Sailing Club - Comets

What is the Comet?

Image of a Comet. The original Comet, fast and exciting for club racing but with its roomy uncluttered cockpit and optional Mino Rig can be ideal for beginners and lightweights. Having been built for twenty years, there are large fleets at many clubs and the active Class Association organises plenty of Comet races each year. Renowned as a deceptively fast dinghy in light winds, the decent sail area and light hull ensure an exciting ride in a breeze! At only 50kg hull weight and using a two-piece mast, the Comet will easily cartop. Built in GRP in a wide range of colour schemes a standard Comet is ready to sail and has top quality fittings with powerful rig controls led aft. An extensive options list includes race rigging kits with ball-bearing blocks and Dyneema control lines as well as covers and launching trolleys.

Comets at Fishers Green

There are, at present, 12 Comets at FGSC, and Comet helms are regular participants in our Menagerie Handicap races and at Open Meetings elsewhere. FGSC has its own established Comet Open Meeting which is always well attended by Club sailors and visitors alike. Comets are a popular choice for smaller adults, particularly ladies, who wish to try their hand at single-handed sailing. Having a deep cockpit, stern sheeting and an easily-handled sail plan, the Comet is ideal for all standards of sailor. Wednesday evening racing takes place during the summer but the Club is not just racing orientated as some of our Comet sailors just use their boats to potter around the lake, take photographs, or go bird watching!
