Club Information
Fishers Green Sailing Club is situated in the Lee Valley Regional
Park, approximately two miles north of Waltham Abbey and within
easy reach of J25 and J26 of the M25. Our sailing water is the
180-acre Holyfield Lake, which, with its countryside setting
and clear open water, provides Members with a beautiful place
to sail.
Fishers Green Sailing Club has been established for over 40 years.
It is a Division of the Civil Service Sailing Association and
is affiliated to the RYA and the Epping Forest Sports Association.
Whilst the sport of dinghy sailing is the predominant activity,
sailboarding is also catered for and encouraged, and many of
our Members are also active in offshore cruising and racing.
The administration of the Club is by an elected voluntary Management
Committee. Much of the maintenance of the clubhouse and other
facilities is undertaken by Members who take part in organised
working parties
during January and on Wednesdays throughout the year.
A volunteer RYA-trained and certificated Rescue Team provides
rescue facilities during racing and training using displacement
boats
and RIBs. We have qualified RYA Powerboating Instructors
who provide training courses both for our Rescue Team and
for outside
organisations
and individuals. Members are welcome to join the Rescue
Team, and appropriate training in Rescue Powerboating can be provided.
Club Race Control, Galley, Bar and general Duty Officer
rotas are operated. This ensures that responsibility
for the management
and
maintenance of the Club is shared among the Members.
The Clubhouse is open and manned on Saturdays, Sundays, Bank
Holidays and
on Wednesdays throughout the summer.
Sailing
We are open to all classes of monohull dinghies and sailboards,
and provide class and handicap racing throughout the year.
The main classes currently active at Fishers Green are Solo, Laser,
Comet, Cadet, Wineglass, Wayfarer and RS200. Racing is well
run
with a range of courses that can be varied according to the
prevailing conditions. An excellent standard of racing is enjoyed,
and FGSC
Members have had notable successes in National and International
competitions.
Fishers Green is home to a flourishing Cadet Squadron, and
a band of dedicated parents and instructors are helping to
encourage,
train and support the next generation of dinghy sailors. Fishers
Green Cadets are currently represented in the National and
Regional RYA Youth Squads, and new recruits are always welcome.
The recent award of Volvo RYA Champion Club Status to FGSC
gives recognition to the achievements of our Cadets and their
mentors.
The 2003 Cadet Class Inland Championship was won by a helm
and crew from the Fishers Green Squadron.
We have Oppi dinghies to provide basic training for our younger
sailors, and, thanks to the generosity of the Lee Valley
Regional Park, we have now also acquired Wayfarer, Topper
and Laser
dinghies that are available for hire to Members, subject
to availability.
It is our aim to promote safe sailing for all the family
and we not only offer dinghy sailing training days for
Members but also
fully support all forms of recreational sailing. Our
membership includes a number of RYA-qualified Sailing Instructors
who are always willing to offer advice if requested,
and
who
can
also
arrange individual tuition.
Members also charter offshore yachts from time to time
and opportunities arise to sail to France or the Channel
Islands
or to undertake
coastal cruises from various British ports and marinas.
Facilities
Ample car parking is available adjacent to the dinghy park.
The broad expanse of grassland at the water’s edge is ideal
for summer picnics. Good wide slipways and a large, sheltered
dinghy park provide the ideal conditions for keeping boats close
to the water, ready to sail with easy launching and recovery.
The modern clubhouse, self-built by Members, overlooks the water
and provides changing rooms, showers, kitchen facilities and
a licensed bar. It is a pleasant place to relax, and a sheltered
viewpoint to watch the action on the lake. There are swings and
a climbing frame (and, of course, the Oppi dinghies) to entertain
the younger members of the family under parental supervision.
The galley provides sandwiches, snacks, light meals and endless
tea, coffee and soft drinks.
Social Activities
The full programme organised by our Social Committee includes
discos and other music events, dances, barbecues, Launching
and Laying Up suppers and an Annual Dinner & Dance. There
is a pool table, table tennis, TV, darts and, of course, a
well stocked bar to complete the social facilities.
FGSC takes pride in being a family club. Indeed, we now have
Members from the third generation of the original families
who joined in the 1960s. Every year, many of our members holiday
together in Devon to participate in the Salcombe Regatta. It’s
all part of the fun of Fishers Green!
Young or old, racing or pottering, long-time Member or newcomer,
everyone finds a warm welcome at Fishers Green Sailing Club!
